WHAT IS GOD'S FAVOUR?

INTRODUCTION

According to the Bible, the favor of God is the grace and kindness that God extends to his people. It is the unmerited and undeserved blessings that God bestows upon individuals, groups, and nations. The Bible speaks of God's favor as a shield that protects, a covering that preserves, and a provision that supplies. God's favor can be seen in his provision of salvation through Jesus Christ, in his protection of his people during difficult times, and in his blessings on those who follow him.

In the Old Testament, the term "favor" is often translated as "grace" or "unmerited favor." God's favor is often associated with his covenant with Israel, and it is often through this favor that Israel is able to defeat their enemies and receive blessings. For example, Psalm 30:5 says "For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime."

In the New Testament, the concept of God's favor is closely tied to the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Through Jesus' death and resurrection, believers are able to receive the favor of God and be reconciled with him. For example, Ephesians 2:8-9 states "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

In the Bible, there are different levels of God's favor that can be experienced by individuals and groups. Some examples include:

  1. General favor: This refers to blessings and provisions that are available to all believers, regardless of their level of spiritual maturity or obedience. 2. Special favor: This refers to blessings and provisions that are specific to certain individuals or groups and may not be experienced by others. An example of this can be seen in the story of Esther, where God granted her favor and protection as she went before the king to save her people (Esther 5:2).
  3. Supernatural favor: This refers to blessings and provisions that go beyond what is natural or expected, and are only possible through the power of God. An example of this can be seen in the story of Gideon, where God granted him favor and victory over a much larger enemy army through supernatural means (Judges 6-7).
  4. Abundant favor: This refers to blessings and provisions that are in abundance and more than enough. An example of this can be seen in the story of Joseph, where God granted him favor and success in everything he did and he became a ruler in Egypt (Genesis 39:1-6)
  5. Unfailing favor: This refers to blessings and provisions that are always present and never fail. An example of this can be seen in Psalm 91:14-16 it says "Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life, I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."

It's important to note that the levels of God's favor are not mutually exclusive, and a person may experience several levels of favor at different times in their life. Also, it's not based on the person's merit, but on God's grace and willingness to bless.

Deuteronomy 28:11-13 states "The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands."
  4. Protection favor: This refers to the favor of God in providing protection and safety for His people. Psalm 91:1-2 states "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 5. guidance favor: This refers to the favor of God in providing guidance, direction, and wisdom for His people. Isaiah 30:21 states "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

  7. Love favor: This refers to the favor of God in providing love and affection toward His people. Romans 8:38-39 states "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

These are just some examples of the categories of God's favor that can be found in the Bible, it's important to note that the favor of God can manifest in many ways and it's not limited to these examples and that God's favor is not based on the person's merit but on his grace and willingness to bless.

HOW TO GET FAVOUR FROM GOD?

There are several ways to receive favor from God according to the Bible. Here are a few examples:

  1. Seek God with all your heart: Psalm 119:2 states "Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart."
  2. Walk in obedience to God: Psalm 5:12 states "For you, Lord, bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield."
  3. Seek wisdom and understanding: Proverbs 2:3-6 states "Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."
  4. Humble yourself before God: James 4:6 states "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."
  5. Pray and meditate on God's word: Joshua 1:8 states "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."
  6. Give and be generous: Proverbs 11:25 states "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."
  7. Have faith in God: Hebrews 11:6 states "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
  8. Love and serve others: Matthew 25:40 states "The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
  9. Seek righteousness: Psalm 24:3-5 states "Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior."

It's important to remember that the favor of God is not something that can be earned or deserved, but is a gift of grace from God. These verses can be a guide to help us understand how to cultivate a relationship with God and align our hearts with His will, but ultimately it is up to God to decide when and how to bless us.
